Mount Vernon

The American Transport Mount Vernon

The Mount Vernon was already at sea carrying American lend lease materials to British forces when the Pacific War broke out. She was quickly redirected and became part of the first convoy to reinforce Singapore.

This picture is used coutesy of Thomas Alison of Cumberland, RI. He served first on the Mount Vernon, and later on the fleet carrier Hornet II as commander of a 20mm anti-aircraft battery.

The wartime edition of Janes Fighting Ships does not have a photo of the Mount Vernon, though the ship is listed, making this a fairly rare image. It may not be reproduced without express written permission of the owner.
