USS Thornhill In The Pacific

Imiage

Imiage was one of the tiny islands at Yalut, and where the seaplane base and main force of the garrison were located.

Panorama Of Destruction

Imiage and the other remaining Japanese bases in the Marshalls had been long since bypassed and left to whither on the vine by the time the war ended.

Harrassing air and sea bombardments were regularly conducted against the garrison, and by August 1945 almost nothing was left standing or intact on the island.

In the left foreground the Japanese "hospital" can be seen.

Admiral's Bombshelter

Read Admiral Masuda kept his head low in this bomb proof shelter during enemy attacks.

Storehouse

Pitted by near misses and hits, this concrete storehouse remained standing despite the efforts of the Americans.
