USS Thornhill In The Pacific

October 1945

Final Negotiations

This sequence of photos was taken on 27 October 1945, the day a Japanese aircraft carrier arrived to repatriate the garrison, probably Hosho. Only 900 of the original 1800 man garrison survived to return home.

In the photo showing the officers standing, note difference in stature between the ill supplied and fed Japanese Lieutenant and Commander compared to the Americans.

Services For American Flyers

In early 1944, five American Naval aviators were captured, tortured and killed by the Japanese on Imiage. Proper services were performed by the Thornhill's crew.
