USS Thornhill In The Pacific

Yalut

Blasted

This series of shots shows the destruction at Yalut. Almost no vegetation or anything else remains. Long a target of air attacks and naval bombardment, almost eveything on the island had been blasted.

Breakfast, Lunch And Dinner

Cut off from supplies, coconut trees offered a ready food supply. Even if the ones on their own islands were mostly blown to bits, the many other tiny islets of the atoll ensured that this part of the Japanese diet would remain available.

Fortification And The 195

Log and earthen bunkers with interlocking fields of fire cover the beaches at Yalut. Even in an advanced state of isolation the defenders had still be ready to fight to the last.

YMS 320

Mass produced light minesweepers such as the 320 served throughout the Pacific, helping to make many a harbor safe for the big ships. Deemed worthy of only a number and not a name, these small ships were workhorses that handled the drudgery work behind the front lines.
