USS Thornhill In The Pacific

The photos in this exhibit were taken during the 1944 and 1945 by Richard G. Ray, who served aboard the destroyer escort USS Thornhill (DE-195). He was a Lieutenant (JG) and part of the ASW team.

The color photos are from September and October of 1945, at Jaluit (usually spelled Yalut in modern sources), in the Marshall Islands.

During his service on the Thornhill, the ship sailed from New York to pass progressively through:

  • Casco Bay, Maine
  • Southampton, England
  • Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
  • Coco Sola, Panama
  • San Diego, California
  • Pearl Harbor, Oahu
  • Eniwetok, Marshall Islands
  • Majuro, Marshall Islands
  • Jaluit, Marshall Islands
  • Kwajelein, Marshall Islands
